The Difference Between Waxing and Laser Hair Removal

The Difference Between Waxing and Laser Hair Removal

Waxing and laser hair removal are two very popular methods of getting rid of hair on the legs, arms, underarms, bikini line, back, and face. Though both are effective, they are very different from each other. We break down the differences here!

How the Hair is Removed

With waxing, the hair is pulled out at the root by wax applied to the hair. With laser hair removal, the laser destroys the root of the hair follicle.

Whether Coloring Matters

One limitation of laser hair removal is that it’s most effective on people with light skin and dark hair. People with dark hair and dark skin, or light hair and light skin, will not find it to be as effective. Waxing, on the other hand, is effective regardless of coloring.

The Pain Factor

People report that both waxing and laser hair removal are painful, albeit in different ways. When the laser is used, it can cause a feeling like a thick rubber band snapping against the skin. However, when we do laser hair removal we always uses a topical anesthetic cream.  With waxing, the pain feels like what it is: hair being ripped out by the roots. In both cases, the pain is short-lived.

Waxing requires regular appointments to remain hair-free, every three to four weeks on average. Laser hair removal, on the other hand, may only require six to eight treatment sessions total, spaced several weeks apart, for the desired results.

Waxing is more widespread and can even be done at home with waxing kits. Laser hair removal requires the equipment and expertise of a trained physician, Physician Assistant, or Registered Nurse.

How Long Results Last

This might be the biggest difference between the two. No matter how much waxing you do, the hair continues to grow in at the same thickness and rate as before. With laser hair removal, the results are long-term (though not technically permanent). Regrowth will be significantly reduced and can be managed with occasional touch ups every six months to a year. This is the main reason for choosing laser hair removal over waxing.

Which is Right for You?

Waxing and laser hair removal are both good options for removing hair as an alternative to shaving. The method that is right for you depends on your coloring, goals, and preferences.
